Job Type: Full Time – Permanent (12‑month recurring, 1.00 FTE)
The Extension Agent, Consumer Horticulture is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating an outcome‑based educational program addressing priority issues in Wilson County. The position requires technical expertise in consumer horticulture and the ability to design and deliver educational programs that meet community needs.
- Recruiting, training, and managing Extension Master Gardener volunteers and other community volunteers to expand outreach efforts.
- Developing and working with stakeholder‑based committees and boards to provide input and direction for Extension programs.
- Building partnerships with community organizations to connect local resources with Extension programming.
This position also provides leadership for the Wilson Botanical Gardens (WBG), a 10‑acre site located at the Wilson County Agricultural Center. The Agent will provide oversight for the part‑time WBG technician who supports the daily care and maintenance of the gardens. The lab also supports forestry programming in Wilson County.
Other Work and ResponsibilitiesThe Extension Agent works with a variety of local groups and organizations to support educational programming and encourage community involvement. Collaboration with other Extension program areas is expected to strengthen the overall county Extension program.
Requirements and QualificationsMinimum Experience/
Education:
One of the following:
• Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in an agricultural or related field (GPAA waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree).
• Bachelor’s degree and completion of at least one‑half of Master’s coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, with at least one degree in an agricultural or related field.
• Master’s degree with at least one in an agricultural or related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and academic training in horticulture or a closely related field; a master’s degree is preferred. Knowledge of turf, shrubs, and trees adapted to the coastal region of the southeastern United States and typical insect, disease, and cultural problems is desirable. Volunteer management, project management skills and experience; and an appetite for public outreach and service to the community.
Travel:
Travel within the county and district is required and reimbursed according to state guidelines.

Licenses/Certifications:
Valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation. An NC driver’s license is required.
