Primary Purpose of Position

The County Extension Director is an employee of North Carolina State University. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide leadership for and coordinate the efforts of the county Extension staff in developing an effective total county Extension educational program.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit – Ashe County Cooperative Extension

North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research‑based information to North Carolina citizens. Our mission is to partner with communities and local governments to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land cabelos economy of North Carolina.

Ashe County is a mountainous county in the northwestern corner of North Carolina with a population of 27,281. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the county experiences four distinct seasons. The three townships are Jefferson (the county seat), Lansing, and West Jefferson. The charm of small‑town living draws thousands of tourists each year resulting in $51.59 million dollars in 2015. Ashe County is home to thriving businesses including GE Aviation and American Emergency Vehicles, the number‑one manufacturer of domestic ambulances in the United States.

Ashe County Airport has the highest elevation of any airport in North Carolina. The county is the leading producer of Christmas trees and greenery in the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities

The County Extension Director (CED) serves as the county Extension administrative leader and is responsible for administration and maintaining an effective advisory leadership system. Core duties include:

  • Providing visionary leadership for a comprehensive Extension program.
  • Maintaining an advisory leadership system representative of the program of work.
  • Managing and coordinating resource development across all program areas.
  • Marketing Extension programs and their impacts.
  • Organizing and allocating resources, preparing budgets, maintaining administrative relationships, interpreting and communicating policy.
  • Teaching, evaluating and reporting within the assigned county.
  • Coordinating staff development and training, conducting performance evaluations, and aligning staff work responsibilities.
  • Maintaining effective relationships with county government agencies and organizations, local officials, area agencies, universities, and Extension personnel in surrounding counties.

Travel within the district and occasional travel outside the district is required.
