About Dare County

Dare County is located in northeastern North Carolina along the Atlantic seaboard. Dare County stretches along almost 110 miles of shoreline known as the Outer Banks. The County seat at Manteo is approximately 200 miles east of Raleigh, the State capitol, and 90 miles south of Virginia Beach‑Norfolk, Virginia, metropolitan area. The County contains much of what is known as North Carolina’s “Outer Banks” resort and vacation areas and contains approximately two‑thirds of the North Carolina coastline.

Six municipalities are located within the county:
Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Manteo, Nags Head and Southern Shores. Dare County has a permanent population of approximately 37,000 residents.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide visionary leadership for a comprehensive Extension program to meet the needs of all segments of the population.
  • Serve as the County Extension administrative leader with responsibilities for administration, public policy issues, and community/leadership development.
  • Maintain an effective advisory leadership system representative of all program areas.
  • Coordinate and secure resource development for all program areas, including marketing, budget preparation, and funding acquisition.
  • Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with county government, agencies, schools, local officials, area agencies, and university extensions.
  • Oversee staff development, training, evaluations, and alignment of work responsibilities.
  • Organize and allocate resources, prepare budgets, maintain administrative relationships, interpret and communicate policy, teach, evaluate, and report in the county.
  • Travel within the district and occasiona-ly outside the district as required.
Supervisory

Number of Permanent Employees supervised: 4.
Percent of Time Spent: 50% administrative, 50% in one of the following program areas: 4‑H Youth Development, Agriculture, or Family and Consumer Sciences.

Minimum Experience / Education

The minimum requirements for the County Extension Director are either:

  • (i) A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a field related to Extension, educational programming, administration, organizational leadership, or public administration and a minimum of 3 years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar work experience; or
  • (ii) A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a field related to Extension, educational programming, administration, organizational leadership, or public administration and a minimum of 10 years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar work experience. A candidate applying with a Bachelor’s degree and less than 10 years of experience must be actively enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program and confer the degree within one year of hire.
