Position Overview

NC State Extension brings research-based knowledge to all North Carolinians, helping them transform science into everyday solutions. The Extension Agent in this position will develop, market, implement, and evaluate a plan of work in Family & Consumer Sciences that leads to improved quality of life for Cleveland County families and individuals. This plan shapes informal educational programs and learning activities that help citizens develop the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy food choices, improve health & wellness through diet & physical activity, prepare nutritious meals at home, use local foods, practice food safety principles, stretch the food dollar, maximize food assistance benefits, and safely preserve food at home.

Additional responsibilities include collaborating with community agencies and organizations to address local needs related to kinship care and food insecurity, and serving as the agent liaison for the Cleveland County Extension & Community Association, providing leadership, supervision and assistance and creating volunteer opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, market, implement and evaluate a comprehensive plan of work in Family & Consumer Sciences.
  • Design and deliver informal educational programs and learning activities.
  • Collaborate with community partners to address local needs related to kinship care and food insecurity.
  • Act as the liaison for the Cleveland County Extension & Community Association, providing leadership and supervision.
  • Demonstrate program alignment with local needs, state priorities and overall Extension goals.
Performance and Evaluation
  • Program Planning:
    Plans comprehensive research-based educational programming that addresses identified local issues.
  • Program Delivery:
    Delivers research-based programs and services using varied educational strategies and teaching methods.
  • Evaluation:
    Uses appropriate evaluation methods and tools to improve effectiveness and quality of teaching methods, and to evaluate program outcomes and impacts.
  • Marketing:
    Utilizes effective strategies to build awareness of Extension’s educational programs and events, grow brand recognition and communicate the value and impact of programs.
  • Other dimensions:
    Expertise, Accountability, Customer-Oriented, Team-Oriented, Compliance & Integrity align with state priorities.
Requirements and Preferences
  • Workb>: 8 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday and nights & weekends as required.
  • Minimum Experience/Education
    :
    • Bachelor’s degree with overall GPA ≥ 2.5 or a GPA ≥ 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (based on a 4.0 scale). GPA waived for NCCE Program Associates holding a bachelor’s degree.
    • Bachelor’s degree with at least half of a Master’s curriculum completed, GPA ≥ 3.0, and at least one degree in family and consumer sciences.
    • Master’s degree in family and consumer sciences or related field.

    Master’s degree desirable, especially in family and consumer sciences, nutrition or related science. Candidates are encouraged to pursue a Master’s degree post‑hiring and NC State offers tuition waiver and professional development.
  • Required License or Certification
    :
    Valid North Carolina driver’s license and reliable personal transportation. Must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
