The agent provides leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of effective educational programs in family and consumer sciences, including foods and nutrition, health and wellness, food preservation techniques, the Serv Safe program, and local foods. The agent recruits and trains Extension Volunteers and serves as an advisor to the Extension Volunteer Association.
Duties and Responsibilities- Provide leadership in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impact.
- Support the total Extension program as a team player.
- Network with broad audiences, customers, volunteers, Extension Specialists, and local staff.
- Actively seek outside resources to enhance the program.
- Develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting educational programs.
- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of a family & consumer sciences educational program that meets county needs, emphasizing nutrition, food safety, and local foods.
- Manage and grow a team of Extension Master Food Volunteers to support programming initiatives.
- Coordinate and facilitate Safe Plates food manager training on a regular basis.
- Demonstrate outstanding relationship skills and a strong background in foods & nutrition.
- Provide at least three references, including a current or former supervisor.
- Travel within and occasionally outside the county as required.
- Work closely with 4‑H staff and volunteers to provide cooking and local foods programming.
- Serve as the Local Foods Coordinator for the county.
- Coordinate monthly food demos at a local food pantry (10 months per year) and at a local farmer’s market one Saturday per month (6 months per year).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education
- Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (or related field).
- Bachelor’s degree plus completion of at least one-half of a Master’s curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (or related field).
- Master’s degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (or related field).

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- Master’s degree in family & consumer sciences, food and nutrition, or related field.
- Experience planning programs.
- Experience working effectively as a team member.
- Experience and knowledge in mass media, marketing, and presentations.
- Skills in leadership, citizenship, budget management, and public relations.
- Ability to recruit, train, and supervise volunteer leaders.
- Knowledge of local food systems in WNC.
- Knowledge of basic nutrition & home cooking skills.
- Ability to manage volunteers.
Required License Or Certification
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required. Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
Work Schedule8 am – 5 pm Monday–Friday; evenings and weekends as required.
