Job TitleFire Academy Coordinator – Wake Technical Community College (WTCC)
OverviewThe Fire Academy Coordinator facilitates and oversees all aspects of WTCC Fire Academies and partner fire academies under the supervision of the WTCC OSFM School Director. The coordinator plans, coordinates, evaluates certification programs, manages instructors, maintains training equipment and facilities, ensures compliance, and promotes program excellence.
Responsibilities- Plan, coordinate, and evaluate NC Fire & Rescue Commission (NCFRC) Firefighter I & II certification programs.
- Serve as Lead Fire Academy and Certification Coordinator/Instructor for all professional development courses.
- Act as Assistant Fire Services Director and NCFRC School Director; ensure compliance with certification delivery requirements.
- Recruit, hire, supervise, and schedule adjunct instructors for the Fire Academy and certification programs.
- Serve as Primary Safety Officer at the Fire Training Center.
- Develop and manage day‑to‑day operations of reality‑based and in‑service training, including instructor records, student registrations, rosters, and reports.
- Provide instruction and instructional support as needed.
- Manage contract entry for classes and adjunct instructors.
- Maintain and update instructor files to ensure compliance with credentialing standards.
- Organize, coordinate, and oversee daily operations of training environments and live‑fire labs, technical rescue labs, driver‑operator stations, and Haz Mat prop areas.
- Manage instructors and coordinators delivering certification and in‑service specialized training.
- Conduct inspections and maintenance of live‑fire, technical rescue, and driver‑operator props.
- Ensure training environments and equipment are safe and operational; process repair and replacement requests.
- Maintain inventory of all fire/rescue equipment assigned to the facility.
- Coordinate and maintain all course records and documentation for reality‑based and in‑service courses.
- Collaborate with internal auditors to ensure program compliance with NCCCS and NCFRC rules.
- Maintain emergency plans for supply access and treatment of injuries sustained during training.
- Conduct periodic inspections of lab equipment for functionality and safety compliance.
- Maintain liaison with fire/rescue professional organizations regarding training programs, operations, and needs.
- Stay current with technological advances in reality‑based training.
- Attend trade shows, conferences, and seminars to enhance program quality.
- Review and enforce safety protocols for all training environments.
- Research, design, and update training programs as needed.
- Submit new courses for course code approval.
- Ensure all course deliveries comply with NCFRC procedures and standards.
- Oversee staff assisting in course planning, development, presentation, and administration.
- Participate in marketing efforts, student recruitment, and presentations to external stakeholders.
- Assist in the coordination, visitation, and evaluation of fire/rescue continuing education classes and other assigned duties.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate Fire Academy graduation ceremonies.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of customer agencies.
- Ability to use a wide variety of teaching methods to promote learning.

- Effective communication skills and ability to maintain positive working relationships with students, peers, supervisors, and staff.
- Ability to maintain records accurately and meet deadlines consistently.
- Working knowledge of Learning Management Systems.
- Ability to perform normal duties with minimum supervision.

- Resourcefulness, initiative, enthusiasm, and a sincere interest in helping students reach their maximum potential.
- NCFRC Level II Instructor certification.
- Qualified as NCFRC Firefighter I & II Instructor.
- Seven (7) years of full‑time firefighter work experience.
- Five (5) years of teaching fire‑fighter certification courses for a community college.
- Seven (7) years of documented time delivering FF I & II certification instruction.
- Three (3) to five (5) years serving as a Fire Academy Coordinator or as a Fire Academy Lead Instructor.
