Overview
The Collections Specialist works directly with the Curator of Collections for the Historic Resources and Museum (HRM) Program on collections management tasks such as inventory, record-keeping, moving objects, and database entry. Assists the Curator of Collections in maintaining records of accession, condition, and location of more than 27,000 objects in the HRM Program Collection. The candidate will be required to have a driver s license because of the necessity to travel between the various locations within the Historic Resources and Museum Program.
The Historic Resources and Museum Program oversees operations, programs, and collections at all of the City of Raleigh-run historic sites and museums, including The City of Raleigh Museum, Pope House Museum, John P. Top Greene Cultural Center, Mordecai Historic Park, the Raleigh Trolley, Latta University Historic Park, Moore Square, Pullen Park, Tucker House, the Borden Building and Stone Circle at Fletcher Park, and Fred Fletcher Amphitheater.
This position provides support for collections management projects focused on cataloging, photographing, inventorying, numbering, and/or rehousing a variety of objects. Other activities include exhibit maintenance, environmental monitoring, and artifact research.
Responsibilities- Assist with collections management projects such as cataloging, photographing, inventorying, numbering, and rehousing objects.
- Record-keeping and database entry for items in the HRM Program Collection.
- Assist in maintaining records of accession, condition, and location of objects (over 27,000 in the collection).
- Assist with exhibit maintenance and environmental monitoring.
- Conduct artifact research as part of collections activities.
- Travel between various locations within the Historic Resources and Museum Program; a valid driver s license is required.
- High School diploma and the equivalent of 3 semesters of college credit with a focus in history, art history, or a related field.
- A valid NC Driver s License and a safe driving record.
- Effective oral and written communication, attention to detail, and time management skills.
- Basic knowledge of proper artifact handling and museum documentation.
- Experience working in a museum, historic site, gallery, or related field.
- Experience using museum collections management software including Past Perfect.
- Experience monitoring the environment of exhibit and storage spaces.
- Experience in conducting a museum collections inventory.
- Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
- Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. - Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with exposure to hazardous physical conditions, atmospheric conditions, and environmental conditions; may include exposure to hazardous materials and intense noise. - The essential duties, functions and Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) designation may vary based on the specific tasks assigned to the position.
