This is an exciting trades inspector opportunity within the Mechanical Trade (Special Projects) – Building and Safety Division of the Planning and Development Department. Building and Safety Special Projects Division performs inspections during various stages of a construction project. Our inspectors make sure that all work meets state code requirements for the building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades. This position will be responsible for providing mechanical inspections and/or enforcement activities.
Mechanical inspections will be required for large and complex commercial projects at various stages. This role involves communication with various project stakeholders, including City leadership and the public.

The Planning and Development Department is responsible for planning and visioning for the future growth of Raleigh and permitting and inspections for residential and non-residential development projects. Our inspectors make sure that all work meets state code requirements for the building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades. All four trade groups perform an average of 600 inspections a day in Raleigh!

Conducts advanced technical inspections and plan reviews for new or existing buildings and systems to ensure compliance with building codes, laws, and regulations
Review plans for renovations, alterations, additions, and/or field revisions; research project-related information
Evaluate submittals and make approval/denial decisions; issue permits based on approved plans
Conducts field evaluations and investigations to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards
Performs research and reviews equipment specifications for accuracy and adherence to requirements
Consults with design professionals and documents compliance issues as needed.
Provides technical expertise, guidance, and interpretations related to code compliance questions
Delivers clear communication and customer support to permit applicants and other stakeholders
Coordinates plan reviews and inspections with other departments to maintain consistency and efficiency
Recommends alternatives and solutions to maintain compliance with applicable codes and standards
Maintains accurate records, files, and documentation of code information, resources, and updates
Identifies, develops, and implements processes and practices that promote effective and meaningful citizen engagement
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 3 to 5 years’ experience in residential/commercial construction inspection, plans review, construction or related work. OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge,…
