What You'll Be Doing
Wake County Planning & Development Services is seeking a Planner I to join the County team as a permanent full-time employee. The position performs basic to moderately professional-level planning by administering the Unified Development Ordinance, conducting professional studies, research, analysis, and report writing on planning, subdivision, and zoning issues, and interpreting and enforcing zoning and subdivision laws. The role includes regular project management responsibilities under general direction.
This role includes efforts in the office, in the field, and at other work venues as needed.
Essential functions will include:
- Performs data gathering and analysis with GIS and software programs and prepares staff reports and presentations for fellow staff and supervisors.
- Present reports to County Planning Board and Board of Adjustment.
- Other duties as assigned by the Land Development Administrator.
- Occasional special projects as assigned in the administration or long‑range planning divisions.
- Researches and prepares data and reports for current planning staff on subdivisions, zoning, and land‑use issues where indicated.
This position works Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) 8:30 AM – 5:15 PM. The schedule may be adjusted based on organizational needs and may include work in the office, field, and other venues. During the first year of employment, the employee will be in-office full time. There may be capacity for remote work on occasion after the first year.

The Basics (RequiredEducation and Experience )
- Bachelor's degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
- No specific experience required.
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted.

Beyond the Basics (PreferredEducation and Experience )
- Master’s degree in urban and regional planning, geography, landscape architecture, environmental science, or public administration.
- Two years of extensive development review experience supported by GIS capabilities (iMaps preferred) and professional certification or licensure as a Planner (AICP), Zoning Official (CZO), or Landscape Architect (PLA); experience with multi‑agency reviews through the permitting process.
- Strong communication skills, verbal and written.
- Strong analytical ability.
- Conversant with development review.
- Knowledge of the development continuum.
- Sound judgment.
- Ability to navigate organizational and process dynamics.
