Overview
The City of Raleigh is hiring a Senior Engineering Inspector to perform high level inspections on roadways, sidewalk, traffic calming and greenway projects. This position is part of the Roadway Design and Construction Division of the Raleigh Engineering Services Department and is tasked with inspecting all field operations on small to large Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) across the city.
You’ll ensure consistency and uphold state and local standards in CIP engineering inspections across the City of Raleigh. You will oversee daily project inspections of new and upgraded water, sewer, sidewalk, greenways and street improvements, respond to external partners (contractors, engineers, consultants), provide support of a key inspection unit in the city, and coordinate with internal departments on matters of inspections and other matters relating to engineering inspections.

About You:
You’re a detailed oriented, proactive problem solver with experience in field operations, infrastructure maintenance and construction, water and sewer construction, erosion control, traffic control, greenways, and street infrastructure construction. You understand the importance of attention to detail and take pride in helping ensure public infrastructure is safe, functional and built correctly.
You may have experience inspecting, construction or repair work, preparing project quantities and pay estimates, coordinating with contractors or assisting field crews. You excel in a role that blends technical skills, customer service and public impact.

The Roadway Design and Construction Division is a part of the Engineering Services Department at the City of Raleigh. Our engineers, inspectors, crews and coordinators are responsible for inspecting and improving the physical infrastructure that keeps Raleigh moving including streets, sidewalks, curb ramps, right-of-way and water and sewer for Capital Improvement Projects.
This position is a part of the city’s contract inspections team for capital improvement projects within the City of Raleigh limits. Inspections include greenways, traffic calming projects, new and upgraded utility construction, pedestrian improvements, new streets and sidewalks and other associated items. You’ll join a collaborative team that works closely with other city departments, contractors, inspectors engineering consultants and project managers.

Responsibilities- Provide advanced skilled technical work in inspections installation of roadways, asphalt, concrete, structures, stormwater, water and sewer mains, greenways and other various infrastructure in the public right-of-way
- Inspect construction projects and compliance with specifications and standards
- Monitor activities and progress and provide field recommendations. Review Trimble Unity Construct reports each day to ensure status and reporting are kept up to date. Assist in pay estimates as required
- Respond to inquiries from staff, contractors, and engineers via phone, email, and personal interaction. Review submittals
- Prepare technical reports, records and documentation
- Reports directly to an Engineering Inspections Supervisor
- Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned
- This position is required to operate city owned vehicles to visit various job sites daily
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 3 to 5 years’ experience in construction, construction inspection, or related work
OR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licenses or Certifications- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
