What You Will DoAs a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you'll play a vital role in ensuring construction projects, from local eateries to major sports venues, are built with quality and safety at the forefront.
Seasoned professionals can take on leadership roles, guiding projects and mentoring colleagues.
- Field & Lab Testing: Performing field and laboratory testing on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
- Sample Collection & Prep: Collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
- Data Interpretation & Reporting: Interpreting test results and preparing detailed reports.
- Team Collaboration & Compliance: Working closely with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure all work meets specifications and safety guidelines.
Experience shifting work hours based on project demands and weather, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half).
Occasional travel to support other offices is covered with per diem and lodging.
Complete transparency, working outside (most of the time) isn't for everyone, and some projects are more spectacular than others.
However, as you advance in your career, you will see more and more projects where you can say, "I helped them build that."
Responsibilities can include:Technicians I, II, and III
- Reviewing plans and specifications in preparation for field observations on construction sites
- Documenting field activities, observations, and testing results on projects
- Daily use of Metafield, and/or other field and laboratory information management systems
- Calibrating field and laboratory equipment to industry codes and standards
- Perform Special Inspection observations per the International Building Code (IBC)
- Communicating daily with management staff, general contractors, and clients
- Same as above, with the addition of the following:
- Ability to mentor less experienced construction staff and interns
- Ability to train and coach less-experienced construction staff in testing and observation procedures
- Coordination and direction of others on projects requiring multiple construction staff
- Assisting the project manager with plan and specification review for proposal preparation, project assignments, and training
- Serve as a Special Inspection agent, based on certifications and local IBC requirements
- Assisting the project manager with resolutions for deviations from project plans and specifications
- High School diploma/GED
- Technician I
- 0-2 years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
- ACI Certifications preferred
- Technician II
- 2+ years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials, or equivalent experience, and an associate degree in a related field
- ACI Certifications preferred
- Technician III
- 3+ years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials, or equivalent experience, and an associate degree in a related field
- ACI Certifications required
- Additional certifications through ICC, NICET, and/or DOT are preferred. Can vary based on experience
- Senior Technician (IV)
- 5+ years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials. Oversight and/or mentoring experience of junior staff preferred
- ACI Certifications and additional certifications through ICC, NICET, and/or DOT are required. Can vary based on experience
- Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
- Proficiently complete data entry into multiple software applications on a smart device, using Microsoft Office and email
- Effective math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
- American Concrete Institute (ACI):
Field Testing Grade I,
International Code Council (ICC) in the areas of construction materials,
Post Tensioning Institute (PTI), and/or other certifications, depending on the level of experience
You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:
- Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Walking over rough and uneven terrain
Standing up to 8 hours a day, up to 12 hours on occasion - Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
