position purposeunder the direction of the crossing guard supervisor, assist in the control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at an assigned location for a prescribed period of time to ensure the safety of schoolchildren and the safe, orderly flow of vehicular traffic. These part-time duties are performed during the school year from late august to early june. Crossing guards work under the general supervision of the crossing guard supervisor.
Relief crossing guards must be able to report to work with very little notice to substitute for regular crossing guards, there is no guarantee of hours and shiftes may vary.
- report to an assigned crossing in uniform at the appointed time.
- direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic at assigned crossing.
- give clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic.
- make sure signs are understood and obeyed before moving either vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
- ensure that children cross only at the proper location.
- prevent movement of vehicular traffic until all pedstrian have completely cross the street.
- note any present or potential traffic hazards and report them to the racine police department as soon as possible.
- year round outside weather conditions.
- exposure to wet, snow, coldfor or hot-humid conditions.
- high school graduate or equivalency.
- valid wisconsin driver's license required.
- after training by the police department, direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through arm, hand and whistle signals.
- maintain transportation available to reach assigned corners, be punctual and reliable.
- stand for approximately 2 hours.
- speak english understandable.
- talk and hear at normal range or with accommodation.
- reach with hands and arms.
- occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
- use specific vision abilities required by this position including close, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; must ambulate independently, manual dexterity required.
