Job Overview

WEC Energy Group subsidiary We Energies is seeking a Design Specialist – Electric Distribution Protection in our Racine, Wisconsin location. This position is represented by Local 2150.

The Design Specialist provides design engineering, customer contact, analysis, and problem‑solving to maintain the electric distribution protection system and uses computer analysis software, knowledge, experience, and industry standards to evaluate, specify, and set distribution protection devices.

• Maintenance of distribution system models and calculation of fault currents necessary to evaluate protection schemes.
• Specification and setting of protective devices for use on the distribution system including substation: fuses, reclosers, overcurrent and reclosing relays; feeder: reclosers, VFIs, fuses and pad‑mount switch‑fuse units.
• Review of existing feeder and system changes/additions to ensure proper performance under fault conditions and maintenance of acceptable levels of system reliability.
• Analysis of distribution outages and events to aid in system restoration as well as general operations support for planned and emergency reconfiguration issues.
• Participation in the design and application of system restoration schemes including substation auto‑changeover and distributed automation.
• Customer substation interface protection device settings approvals.

• 2‑year associate degree in electrical engineering/electronics technology or a minimum of 60 credits of college coursework from an accredited institution, with a minimum of 35 credits in electrical engineering/electronics.
• Official transcripts required and must be submitted at the time of application, or provided to HR within ten (10) days of the posting closing date.
• Valid driver’s license meeting company requirements for driving.
• Ability to satisfy all Company and NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection Standard 004 security requirements, including a background investigation for unescorted access to critical cyber assets.
