A Woodworking Design Engineer/Draftsman converts architectural sketches and design concepts into precise, build-ready 2D/3D shop drawings, manufacturing plans, and BOMs (Bills of Materials). They use CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Cabinet Vision, Microvellum) to create detailed technical specifications for custom cabinetry, millwork, and furniture, ensuring structural integrity and production efficiency.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Technical Drawing & Modeling: Create detailed shop drawings, including elevations, sections, and, often, exploded views for custom cabinetry, furniture, and millwork.
- Drafting Software Proficiency: Utilize software like AutoCAD, Solid Works, or specialized woodworking software such as Cabinet Vision, Microvellum, or Mozaik to create accurate models.
- Interpretation & Design: Translate blueprints, sketches, and specifications from architects, interior designers, and engineers into technical drawings.
- Engineering & Manufacturing Specs: Define materials, joinery methods, hardware requirements, and construction techniques to ensure products are manufacturable.
- Production Liaison: Collaborate with project managers and production teams to ensure that design intent is met and that drawings are clear for CNC machine programming and assembly.
- Revisions & Quality Control: Review and revise designs based on field measurements or engineering feedback.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Software
Skills:
Expertise in CAD/CAM software (AutoCAD, Microvellum, Solid Works). - Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of woodworking, cabinetry, architectural millwork, materials, and hardware.
- Analytical Thinking: Ability to read architectural plans, blueprints, and structural specifications.
- Attention to Detail: High precision in measurements and specifications to prevent manufacturing errors.
- Education/
Experience:
Typically requires a degree in drafting, engineering, or equivalent experience in cabinetmaking or architectural millwork.
