Introduction:

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department mission: to preserve our parks and open spaces and provide essential recreational programs and cultural services in a safe, professional, and friendly manner. The department manages parks totaling over 1,100 acres, 5 community centers, and many other facilities to provide a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

Position

Purpose:

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Program Coordinators or designee, the position is responsible for implementing a weekly recreation program for children and maintaining a safe learning environment.

Essential Duties

Essential Duties:

* Coordinates a nine-week, themed recreation program according to clearly stated program goals and objectives.

* Provides a creative, fun and innovative learning experience for children from 4 years of age through 8th grade.

* Plans, promotes, organizes and implements daily activities, special events and field trips.

* Monitors, supervises and counsels youth at assigned playground site.

* Maintains safety and well-being of all participants at playground sites, special events and field trips.

* Promotes communication with parents/guardians.

* Controls playground site equipment and supplies.

* Maintains a clean and orderly playground site.

* Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record (

Note:

Successful applicants must fully commit to working their assigned schedule for the duration of the program with time off granted for limited reasons only. Employees may be asked to work a revised schedule/location at any time and are expected to comply. Falsification of an absence will result in termination.)

Environmental/Working Conditions of the Position:

* Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat & cold, and rain.

* Exposure to open water with variable conditions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (note: you will be required to submit documentation for proof):

* Graduating high school seniors intending to enroll with full-time undergraduate college credits in the fall.

* Undergraduate full-time college students who are enrolled and intend to continue on a full-time undergraduate basis in the fall.

* A full-time student shall consist of a minimum of 12 credits per semester.

Students are eligible for a seasonal position five (5) consecutive summers following graduation from high school provided they remain enrolled with 12 or more undergraduate college credits in the semester preceding and following each summer of employment.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

Required:

* Ability to follow oral and written instructions with a minimum of direct supervision.

* Ability to communicate effectively, and exercise good judgment, courtesy and tact when dealing with children, their parents/guardians, and the general public.

* Ability to respond to emergency situations in a calm, efficient and responsible manner.

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands of the Position:

Duties involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking/running over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, kneeling, leaping, jumping down, standing in place or continual walking, lifting and carrying of moderate to heavy items (including people) on a consistent basis.

Expected Work Schedule*:

Five (5) Orientation Dates in mid-June.

Nine (9) Week Playground Program from mid-June to mid-August.

Hours of Employment*:

Leaders for Registered Playground Programs

(Kiddie Korner, Future, Play It Again, BIGS,)

Monday - Thursday, 8am--5pm (one hour break);
Friday, 9am-12pm.

Leaders for Non-Registered & All Sport Academy Playground Programs

Monday - Thursday, 11a.m.

-5 p.m.;
Friday, 9 a.m.

-12 p.m..
