Job Title

Senior z/OS Operating System Engineer (z/OS, RACF) – Remote (near one of the service centers).

Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced z/OS Operating System Engineer with a strong background in designing, deploying, maintaining, and optimizing the z/OS platform including subsystems, coupling facility structures and infrastructure software. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, provide technical leadership, and drive initiatives to enhance the performance, reliability, and security of our mainframe platform.

Must Haves
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in designing, implementing, and maintaining the mainframe computing platform including Parallel Sysplex, z/OS, JES2, and z/VM.
  • Strong knowledge of mainframe security concepts and tools, including RACF (Resource Access Control Facility) and access controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, build, and support Parallel Sysplex application enablement.
  • Experience providing technical leadership for managed service providers and offshore support teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and analyze complex issues.
  • Responsibilities
  • Design, configure, and maintain mainframe operating environments, including z/OS, JES2, and z/VM to meet business needs and performance objectives.
  • Implement and maintain mainframe security measures, including RACF, access controls, encryption, and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead mainframe operating system projects and initiatives from conception to implementation (upgrades, maintenance, system enhancements, and operational support).
  • Collaborate with solutions development, infrastructure, architecture, and managed services teams to understand system requirements and provide effective solutions.
  • Optimize mainframe operating system performance, capacity, and resource utilization through proactive monitoring, tuning, and capacity planning.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex mainframe operating system issues with internal teams, managed services providers, and vendors to ensure timely resolution.
  • Develop and maintain documentation, including system configurations, procedures, and best practices, to facilitate knowledge sharing and compliance with standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers to foster learning and continuous improvement.
  • Stay up to date with new technologies, trends, and best practices in mainframe systems and proactively implement relevant updates and improvements.
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related experience.
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in designing, implementing, and maintaining the mainframe computing platform including Parallel Sysplex, z/OS, JES2, and z/VM.
  • Strong knowledge of mainframe security concepts and tools, including RACF and access controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, build, and support Parallel Sysplex application enablement.
  • Experience providing technical leadership for managed service providers and offshore support teams.
  • Proficiency in mainframe performance monitoring, tuning, and optimization using tools like SMF, RMF, BMC AMI OPS, and IBM Intellimagic Vision.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and analyze complex issues.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership abilities, including experience leading technical projects and mentoring junior team members.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Certifications in relevant technologies are a plus.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
    • Willingness to stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends.
    • Availability for occasional off-hours support as needed.
