IMPORTANT INFORMATION (MULTIPLE VACANCIES)

Applications will be reviewed after the job posting has closed. Selected candidates should be prepared to participate in an interview and swim test to determine eligibility. Participants will be required to complete a swimming assessment which requires swimming four laps (100 yards), tread for 1 minute without the use of your hands, retrieve a brick from 12.5 feet of water.

The anticipated interview date is Wednesday February 25, 2026 in the late afternoon/early evening. This application is required to be filled out prior to being selected for an interview/swim test.

If you receive a conditional offer and do not yet hold a valid Lifeguard certification, you will be required to complete a Lifeguard Certification course. The Lifeguard Certification course will be provided by the Aquatics team for those with a conditional offer. The certification consists of both online and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place only after the online portion has been completed.

For candidates with a conditional offer, you must attend and successfully complete the course during one of the following options:

  • Option 1:
    March 9th through 11th, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Option 2:
    March 16th through the 18th, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Please ensure you are available for all sessions in your chosen option. Anticipated Start Date is Early April following the successful completion of certification.

JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

This is the first level in a broad aquatic series. Incumbents are responsible for providing direct care for clients and the general public in their area of assignment. Specific duties include: ensuring the safety of swimmers, providing general customer service, implementing safety protocols as directed, and responding to emergency situations in aquatic environments. When assigned to Head Lifeguard, incumbents are additionally responsible for providing supervision of Lifeguards and Swim Lesson Instructors, checking the chemical content of pool water, requesting changes in pool additives, supervising cleaning of the pool and surrounding areas, planning, organizing, and running events and activities, and monitoring pool operations and activities in the absence of the Pool Manager.

CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from the Swim Lesson Instructor (SLI) classification by the incumbents primarily focusing on ensuring the safety of all pool patrons, preventing accidents, and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards are responsible for monitoring aquatic environments, enforcing rules, and performing rescues, whereas Swim Lesson Instructors focus on teaching swimming techniques and providing instruction to individuals or groups. A Lifeguard reports to a Pool Manager and to full-time staff members.

ESSENTIAL

DUTIES

The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs.

  • Supervises patrons during all pool programming and respond to level of training for all medical and non-medical emergencies.
  • Facilitates events and programming on the pool deck by assisting with setup and breakdown and leading activities when not on supervision duty.
  • Prevents injury at the Aquatic Center by supervising pool patrons and enforcing pool rules.
  • Maintains daily cleanliness of the pool deck, pool, features, and locker room area.
  • Provides customer service to all aquatic complex patrons by answering questions and providing information.
  • Completes daily reports.
  • Attends all scheduled in-service trainings.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

When assigned to Head Lifeguard in addition to Lifeguard and Swim Lesson Instructor responsibilities:

  • Teaches and leads lifeguards.
  • Monitors daily activities at the aquatics center.
  • Performs general pool maintenance activities that includes tracking pool chemicals and makes recommendations for chemical adjustments.
  • Assists the Pool Manager with resolving complaints from patrons.
