JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARYPositions assigned to this class are responsible for overseeing and managing the activities, budget, and personnel of the Fleet division.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is a first level fleet maintenance management classification in the maintenance and operations job family, recognized as an organizational authority within fleet maintenance and demonstrates specific, broad practical knowledge. Work involves directing, planning and coordinating staff and projects/programs, and budget. Assists with policy development in the Fleet division.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES- Supervises staff; schedules staff, provides communication from management to work unit, delegates and monitors workflow; hires, coaches, evaluates, disciplines, inspects work and develops staff for efficient operation.
- Oversees and manages fleet maintenance operations and activities which includes maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment; repair and maintenance activities to minimize downtime; responds to complaints related to operations/activities: researches problems/complaints and initiates problem resolution; manages purchasing and inventory control activities; maintenance of the fueling system; testing of vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts to ensure proper operations prior to release to customers;
utilizes a fleet maintenance management system to manage vehicle acquisition, maintenance, repairs and disposal according to pertinent laws, regulations and policies. - Coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; coordinates or conducts staff training activities.
- Participates in the accomplishment of organizational, departmental and division goals and objectives; assists in evaluation efficiency and effectiveness of program operations, procedures, and use of resources; recommends and/or implements improvements as needed.
- Represents the Town and serves as staff liaison to committees and provides direction and guidance and recommendations to management staff; investigate complaints and implement corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints regarding fleet maintenance.
- Prepares and administers the division budget by forecasting expenditures, presenting proposals for approval, authorizing payments and monitoring expenditures for recommended adjustments; makes recommendations regarding bid proposals; prepares RFP’s and participates in the development of bid specifications for new equipment and material.
- Manages contracts for maintenance services provided by outside vendors if required; coordinate projects and work activities with other departments contractors, consultants, outside agencies, or others as needed.
- Monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget; plans and directs the inspection and monitoring of fleet maintenance contracts; makes recommendations regarding bid proposals; prepares RFP’s and participates in the development of bid specifications for new equipment and material.
- Represents the Town and serves as staff liaison to committees and provides direction and guidance and recommendations to management staff and citizen committees; answers questions and provide information to the public; investigates complaints and implements corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints regarding street maintenance.
- Prepares and presents oral and written reports to senior management, Town Council and the public.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Public or Business Administration or a related field, 5 years of technical experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and diesel equipment, and 3 years of supervisory or lead experience; or an equivalent…
