Overview
Zurich Canada is currently looking for a Senior Automobile Underwriter (Montreal) to further develop our portfolio in the Eastern Canadian commercial insurance market. Reporting to the Eastern Region Manager, you will be responsible for a portfolio of existing medium to large complex commercial auto risks, and you will also have the opportunity to develop your automobile portfolio further by leveraging your broad broker network and your underwriting knowledge of all automobile products regionally and nationally to grow your book of business.
To analyze and underwrite new and renewal business, under limited direction, utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on highly complex assignments, ensuring a high-level service to customers. This is a hybrid job opportunity.

What you will do- Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities with key broker partners.
- Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
- Qualify accounts to meet the organization’s appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.
- Make agent / broker / customer calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose, including on-site visits when needed.
- Negotiate Terms & Conditions and close deals.
- Cross-sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account.
- Participate in Sales Team meetings related to assigned brokers and/or territory.
- Proactively engage in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to the effective date.
- Update required systems with details of broker / client visits and account status within the specified time frame.
- Serve as key contact for assigned target accounts.
- Develop strong broker and client networks related to industries underwritten by the Business Unit.
- Calculate Target Price accurately using underwriting tools appropriately.
- Measure exposure / analyze risk.
- Assist in training and developing staff.
- Provide expertise on coverage issues with claims programs and guidelines.
- Promote the organization’s products and services to increase penetration within the agency plant.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
- OR High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
- OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
- OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
- Knowledge of line(s) of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines.
- Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.
- Bilingual in French / English is a must.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- 5 or more years of experience with commercial lines auto underwriting.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in:
- Medium to large sized, bulk rated fleet risks;
- Loss rated accounts;
- Heavy commercial US exposure and/or US plated.
