Research Assistant/Associate, Research Scientist
About the Job:
Working at the Marine Corps History Division, the Research Special Assistant (SA) will work within a fast-paced service history office environment. The SA will be responsible for supporting staff with research and preparation of briefs, reports, publications, lineage & honors certificates, and other quick-turn information deliverables and assisting in the organization and preservation of historical documents, to include creation and maintenance of digital files.
Other duties will include supporting public engagement and outreach initiatives.

The job is located at the Marine Corps History Division on board Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA. Work hours are somewhat flexible, but core hours are between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and are not to exceed 29 hours during any work week.
- Archival Research and Data Collection:
Assist with identification and organization of historical documents, photographs, and maps in both hardcopy and digital formats. - Source Analysis and Literature Review:
Assist with reading, interpreting, compiling, and/or transcribing of primary source materials and contextualization of literature reviews. - Database Management:
Assist with metadata creation, updating finding aids, and uploading digital objects. - Writing and Editing Support:
Assist with drafting reports and proofreading. - Project and Administrative Support:
Assist with exhibition & publication planning, organizing research materials, public engagement tours or presentations, and other duties assigned. - Assist in special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Must be proficient in the use of computers and software (MS Office and basic photo editing)
- Attention to detail required
- Ability to work as a member of a team is required.
- Previous historical research experience preferred
- Interest in Marine Corps and/or military history a plus
- Good writing and communication skills are a plus

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard.
The employee frequently is required to be in one position for long periods of screen use, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear both in person and over devices. The employee interacts in close spaces and frequently with other workers, vendors, and clients. May be in situations which require conflict resolution. The position works in an office environment with artificial light and air.
Occasionally are exposed to contaminants like dust.
