Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Ortho General Surgical night shift position requiring ortho and surgical experience in a Level III trauma setting.

• Work in the Ortho General Surgical unit of a hospital with a 40-bed capacity
• Patient population includes general medical and surgical cases such as pneumonia, sepsis, CHF, COPD, AKI, DVT, PE, dialysis, COVID, and orthopedic surgeries
• Patient ratios are typically 1:4-5, assigned by acuity with mixed COVID and non-COVID patients possible
• Care includes surgical procedures such as total joint replacements, abdominal surgeries, urology (TURP), and management of drains, ostomies, and wound vacs
• Centralized telemetry monitoring is available 24/7
• Shift is 12-hour nights with variable weekends according to unit needs
• Floating may be required to other Med/Surg units or ED holding
• Uses Epic for charting, Alaris, and Pyxis systems
• First time travelers will be considered based on fit for the unit
• Team support includes CNAs, free-floating charge nurses, flex nurse for admissions and breaks, and 24/7 hospitalist and RT coverage
• Two days of general hospital orientation and one day of unit orientation provided
• Strict medication safety protocols are enforced, including two-nurse verification for wasting narcotics and benzodiazepines
• Any color scrubs are acceptable
• Free parking is available
• Breaks are required and no phones are permitted on the unit

• Active WA or compact RN license required (pending license considered with proof of application)
• Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg RN experience required
• Recent ortho experience is required
• Current BLS certification required
• Telemetry competency and rhythm interpretation exam must be passed before start
• Strong time management and communication skills required
• Epic charting experience preferred; manager approval required if no prior Epic experience
