SUMMARY: The School Bus Driver is responsible for providing bus transportation service to Chief Leschi students in a safe and timely manner.

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

Chief Leschi Schools is offering a$2,000 incentive bonus
for new Transportation Staff. This incentive is available to individuals who have not been employed by Chief leschi Schools within the past twelve months.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Transports students and other authorized persons safely to and from school, as well as on field, extracurricular, special and/or activity trips as authorized by immediate supervisor.
  • Operates school buses under all types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice.
  • Services, inspects and cleans school buses and related equipment and accessories as required by state, federal, and school policies, to include interior and exterior sweeping and washing, installation of fuel, oil, and coolant, and tire inflation.
  • Maintains control of student passenger safety.
  • Reports unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of any person other than the driver.
  • Completes forms, records and reports as required by law and school policies.
  • Maintains coursework and a driver’s training program as set forth by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the school.
  • Operates school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies promulgated by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
  • Operates and services all school bus equipment and accessories, including but not limited to fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, first aid kits, and manually operated doors.
  • Performs basic first aid as appropriate, which may include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Excellent driving abstract

Valid and current Washington State Driver’s License with CDL (Class

B), P-1 and S endorsements

Documented experience in school setting

Ability to obtain First Aid certification in a timely manner

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be bondable

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Eight hours of a defensive driving course

Valid and current CPR card

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Ability to maintain a favorable background investigation

Successful and/or drug screening

KNOWLEDGE OF:

School board policies and procedures

Effective teaching and training theories & techniques

ABILITY TO:

Take initiative and work independently

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Ability to work with and relate to Native American children and serve as a positive role model

Maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups in a multicultural and diverse community

Work collaboratively with school and central office administrators, parents, and community members

Demonstrate understanding of and experience with cultural competence

Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures
