Overview
The Registered Nurse in the ICU provides direct and indirect patient care. He/she applies the nursing process to plan and implement the care of patients, including patient and family education and continuum of care planning. The Registered Nurse must possess good communication skills and must be able to effectively communicate with physicians, peers, patients and families. He/She works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure quality care is delivered.
Will oversee LPN practices as directed by unit director.
Reports to:
ICU Director
- Providing nursing care appropriate to the condition and needs of the patient.
- Consulting and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide care to patients.
- Establishing, reviewing, revising and following the patient plan of care.
- Administering medications and treatments within the scope of practice for a Registered Nurse.
- Recording patient care activities including assessment, reassessment, and ongoing treatment notes within the patient s medical records.
- Using a variety of computer systems.
- Operating medical equipment used in the care of the patient.
- Providing patient and family education related to treatment, diagnosis, medications, discharge and self-care.
- Providing patient care following nursing standards of care in a manner that promotes excellent outcomes and avoids harm to patients.
- The ability and willingness to follow established Standards of Performance.
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
- Must possess strong computer skills and have the ability to work with multiple computer systems.
- Must be able to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Must be able to operate standard patient care equipment for services provided.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must complete all assigned education in a timely manner.
- Must complete department specific education.
- Actively participates in Foundation Safety Behavior Tools and Tactics such as Briefs, Debriefs, Huddles, Learning Board Activities, Executive Patient Safety Rounds and reporting of unanticipated and unintended patient events regardless of whether there is harm.

- Consistent use of AIDET & 5 P s.
- Uphold the facility s Standards of Performance.
Minimum Education
Must possess an active TN RN license or a compact state license with the intent to obtain a TN RN license within 30 days of hire.
Certifications- BLS - current or must obtain within 90 days from date of hire.
- ACLS - current or must obtain within 90 days from date of hire.
- PALS - current or must obtain within 90 days from date of hire.
- NRP - current or must obtain within 90 days from date of hire.
- Handle with Care - must obtain within 6 months from date of hire.
- Must complete Basic Arrhythmia course within 90 days from date of hire.
