The mission of the Division of Youth Services (DYS) is to protect, restore and improve public safety utilizing a continuum of care that provides effective supervision, promotes accountability to victims and communities, and helps youth lead constructive lives through positive youth development. DYS operates 15 secure facilities serving youth ages 10 to 21 who are pre-adjudicated, sentenced, or committed. DYS administers juvenile parole services and a statewide detention continuum.

About Division Of Youth Services

This work unit provides direct care, safety, and security of youth in DYS custody using a trauma-responsive approach. It covers 24/7 care and supervision in a secure residential setting, including Admissions and Control, school and day programming, detention, assessment, and long-term treatment living units. DYS seeks professionals, team players, and individuals committed to helping youth, with a focus on perseverance as a key attribute.

Duties

This is a direct care/essential role that provides supervision of youth in State Operated Secure Facilities. The role also functions as a Lead Worker with accountability for the work product of Youth Services Specialist I (YSS I). Specific duties and expectations include:

  • Safety/Security: Provide direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated and/or pre-adjudicated youth. Monitor and enforce behavioral plans; supervise activities; conduct crisis interventions, de-escalation, and, in emergencies, use of physical response/restraint; debrief incidents; conduct searches. The Work Leader oversees staff, shift supervision, coaching, mentoring, quality assurance, and input for evaluations.
  • Youth Center Programming: Implement and follow the Youth Center’s behavioral management program; teach, coach, and redirect youth; support initiatives related to youth programming and crisis intervention; facilitate milieu and skill groups.
  • Documentation/Recording and Reporting: Document observations and youth responses in logs and records systems; document youth group activities in database systems.
  • Organizational Accountability: Promote a healthy, positive cultural climate; adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct, DYS Compliance Review Standards, and CDHS/DYS policies; aim for trauma-responsive environments.
  • Training: Complete DYS Pre-Service training, Youth Center training, and onboarding; some travel may be required; complete online training and support behavior management/intervention strategies.
  • Other Duties As Assigned.

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of professional experience in a related occupational field

Substitutions: Additional education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Corrections-related experience includes custody and control of youth or POST/Military law enforcement experience. College coursework in related fields may substitute for experience year-for-year.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with adjudicated/detained youth in a secure facility
  • Self-motivated, positive role model, attention to detail
  • Problem solving, teamwork, effective communication, adaptability
  • Trainer certification in staff development; supervisory/leadership experience
  • Google Suite proficiency; degree in related field; relevant state service experience
Conditions of Employment
  • Background checks and screenings as required by CDHS; must be 21+, no felony/domestic violence history
  • Residency within Colorado at application and throughout employment
  • Driver’s license requirements; vehicle travel may be required
