Your day as a Diesel Mechanic

As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be key in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles, adhering strictly to dealership standards and manufacturer specifications. To thrive as a Diesel Mechanic, you must possess a robust set of skills and qualifications. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with completion of a diesel technology or automotive training program, preferably coupled with several years of hands-on experience. Your strong knowledge of diesel engine systems and diagnostics is crucial for effectively diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues.

Familiarity with diagnostic tools, software, and technical manuals will enable you to perform routine maintenance and repairs, ensuring vehicle safety and performance. You should have strong problem-solving and mechanical aptitude, along with the ability to read and interpret technical documents. Time management and effective communication skills are essential for collaborating with service advisors and maintaining a safe, organized work environment.

A valid driver’s license and the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds are also required to succeed in this role.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic issues in diesel engines and vehicle systems
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs including engine, transmission, brake, suspension and fuel system work
  • Conduct inspections and road tests to ensure vehicle safety and performance
  • Use diagnostic tools, software and technical manuals to identify and resolve issues
  • Accurately document repair orders, parts used and labor hours
  • Communicate effectively with service advisors regarding repair needs and timelines
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines, dealership policies and safety procedures
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work environment
  • Stay current with technical training, certifications and industry advancements
  • Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Completion of a diesel technology or automotive training program preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a diesel mechanic or technician
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engine systems and diagnostics
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and schematics
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • ASE Diesel Certification(s)
  • Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g.Cummins, Duramax, Power Stroke)
  • Experience working in a dealership or high-volume service environment
