The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Forensic Services maintains four operational forensic science laboratories throughout the state:
Denver, Pueblo, Grand Junction, and the Northern Region. Forensic Services is responsible for the scientific analysis of physical evidence collected from crime scenes and operates under the CBIFS Quality and Management system in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
- Typical work hours:
Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. - Primary work is in an office; majority in‑person position.
- 50% active work involving moving, lifting, organizing objects.
- 50% office work including data entry.
This position enters information into various information/database systems in support of the Firearms section and the forensic laboratory system. The role utilizes multiple databases including the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) and the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This position may be called upon to provide courtroom testimony.
- Screen fired cartridge cases for suitability for entry into NIBIN; microscopically screen cases for the number of sources; make entries in NIBIN Brasstrax system; review correlations in NIBIN Matchpoint; test‑fire submitted firearms; document all steps in LIMS; write search notification reports; complete correlation and technical reviews.
- Responsible for case submission in LIMS, receiving evidence from law enforcement agencies, and following approved and legal guidelines for evidence handling. Ensure chain of custody and proper packaging. Transport evidence between CBIFS laboratories and the evidence vault. Release evidence back to submitting agency after testing. Create accurate laboratory records and enter all information into LIMS.
- Three years experience researching confidential databases, cataloging information, and clerical responsibilities.
- OR a combination of related education and/or experience equivalent to three (3) years. If education substitutes work experience, an unofficial transcript of the relevant education must be provided with the application.
- Current CDPS employee.
- Laboratory experience or familiarity with laboratory processes.
- Knowledge and experience handling firearms.
