Department InformationColorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo (CMHHIP) is a leading behavioral health acute care facility dedicated to providing quality mental health services to patients with psychiatric and medical needs.
Purpose of the PositionUnder the direction of a Registered Nurse, this role provides a safe and therapeutic milieu, manages patient and staff safety, participates in therapeutic programming, advises on safety protocols, and serves as a resource and trainer for milieu management.
Key Responsibilities- Manage and maintain a safe, therapeutic environment across multiple units.
- Monitor nursing care; advocate for patients; participate in multidisciplinary team; mentor staff; educate families.
- Provide crisis intervention; respond to emergencies; ensure containment techniques are performed correctly.
- Record and report behaviors, observations, and incidents; refer to RN for assessment.
- Lead assigned therapy sessions; manage patient load; reinforce RN teaching.
- Assist with unit searches, perimeter checks, and safety data sheet awareness.
- Apply precautions and restrictions as needed; alert supervisors for training needs.
- Collaborate with registered nurses and charge RN for patient care planning and review.
- Ensure compliance with Nursing Standards of Care, QAPI goals, and hospital policies.
- Assist with fire drills, unit searches, and communication of safety issues.
- Maintain accurate documentation and participate in QAPI processes.
- Ensure milieus are safe; intervene to maintain safety for patients and staff.
- Provide guidance to other disciplines on safety and security needs.
- Serve as a role model for verbal and physical interventions.
- Ensure correct use of restraints and seclusion protocols.
- Implement trauma-informed care initiatives and provide training.
- Decide on milieu safety measures and conduct unit searches.
- Respond in critical situations; perform CPR and defensive tactics as required.
- Complete required paperwork: incident reports, medication variances, etc.
- Follow multiple standards and policies (e.g., Pharmacy Formulary, Infection Control, Joint Commission, etc.).
- Attend and conduct training sessions; maintain competency records.
- Serve as instructor for safe management of violent individuals.
- Assist in competency assessment and provide training recommendations.
- Attend scheduled meetings and review nursing executive committee minutes.
- Ensure staff are current on updates to policies and standards.
- Maintain nursing standards of care and documentation.
- Participate in QA/PI processes; document patient condition changes.
- Follow Plan of Care interventions and evaluation.
- Execute any other duties required to support unit and department needs.
- Current valid LPN licensure from Colorado Board of Nursing or a state under the eNLC.
- Complete board-approved IV certification course with supervised clinical, or documented completion from another state.
- Three years of professional experience related to the position.
- Appropriate education may substitute up to two years of required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Observe and respond to safety and security breaches; work with assaultive behavior.
- Lift up to 50+ pounds on occasion.
- Ability to perform physical restraint, CPR, and defensive tactics.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Adapt to fluctuating environmental conditions and travel as needed.
- Annual influenza vaccination required.
- Full background check including FBI, CBI, and other required databases.
- Required TB screening; pre‑employment criminal history review.
- Must not engage in inappropriate relationships with patients; disclosure required.
- Must complete CMHIP New Employee Orientation core curriculum.
- Must pass CTI & CPR modules and demonstrate physical ability requirements.
- Work various shifts; must respond promptly to emergencies.
- Payment biweekly.
