Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) is a 24 hour behavioral health acute care facility that provides a safe, secure, and therapeutic setting for patients with psychiatric and medical issues. CMHHIP is a long-established employer and partner in the Pueblo community.

This posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies. If appointed to a position, applicants from outside of Colorado will be required to relocate to Colorado prior to their start date, at their own expense. A short-staffing temporary pay differential of 4% will be applied from July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026.

This position has a residency waiver and will accept applications from residents and non-residents of Colorado.

Description Of Job

Registered Nurse I - Full Time
This posting is used to fill multiple units.

Position details include nursing oversight and direction of nursing personnel working the same shift on the same unit. The RN I provides direction to direct care nursing staff on assigned shifts, serves as a resource and mentor, promotes nursing staff efficiency, and supports attainment of Unit/Program/Hospital/Nursing Department goals for the shift. Primary duties include directing nursing staff for the shift, providing therapeutic nursing care to mentally ill patients, representing the Nursing Department in hospital-wide committees, and applying knowledge and experience to ensure safe and effective patient care.

The RN I responds to emergencies and provides crisis intervention within the milieu.

This position assists nursing staff with clinical direction, QA/PI activities, and compliance, and collaborates across disciplines. It is accountable to the Lead Nurse/Nurse III/Nurse II and facilitates nursing standards of care across all phases of the nursing process and delivery of services. The RN I works with other staff on the unit and adheres to professional codes of conduct, regulatory standards, and scope of practice expectations.

It communicates and clarifies nursing policies at the unit level and helps prepare for onsite surveys and documentation requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical direction for the shift and unit in collaboration with the Lead Nurse
  • Direct staff assignments based on acuity and staffing to maximize quality of care
  • Ensure all nursing services on the unit are delivered correctly and in compliance with CMHIP policies and nursing standards
  • Maintain communication with other disciplines and leadership; relay changes in processes and policies
  • Act as charge nurse for the shift; report injuries or safety concerns promptly
  • Utilize staffing resources and assist in deployment of nursing personnel
Department Standards
  • Maintain nursing standards of care and ensure compliance with policies
  • Adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct and CMHIP Ethics; stay current with policies and clinical updates
  • Collaborate with all departments and provide guidance for daily cross-shift reporting
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and routing of nursing care per hospital procedures
Staff Development / Competencies
  • Mentor and train nursing personnel; provide feedback and development opportunities
  • Ensure staff competency with BEHR and Cornerstone systems including mandatory rosters and training
  • Support mandatory hospital-wide training and adherence to manuals and regulations (DSM, Infection Control, Joint Commission standards, etc.)
  • Act as a resource for staff and provide shift-level direction
  • Follow regulatory guidelines and stay informed of changes that impact the nursing department
Patient Care / Nursing Care
  • Provide nursing care on the assigned shift and maintain a safe, secure, therapeutic environment; respond to psychiatric/medical issues; participate in Trauma Informed Care initiatives
  • Ensure correct patient identification prior to medications and procedures; maintain infection control standards
  • Assess and revise care plans based on patient history; ensure patient rights considerations are observed
  • Educate patients on medications and care needs; support group therapies and family education
  • Provide coverage for the shift/unit and maintain a safe milieu
  • Report urgent staff or patient issues to the Lead Nurse
Other Duties
  • Any other duties required for the shift/unit or department
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess a valid, active Registered Nurse license issued by the State of Colorado (DORA) or by any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
