Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) is a leading employer and provider of quality mental health services. It is a 24‑hour behavioral health acute care facility that offers evaluation and treatment for patients who are severely mentally ill, aiming to return patients to optimal functioning and back to community as appropriate.

Resident/Non‑resident:
The position has a residency waiver and will accept applications from residents and non‑residents of Colorado. Applicants from outside Colorado must relocate.

Temporary Pay Differential: 4% (July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026).

About the Position

Assisting nursing staff with clinical direction/supervision, QA/PI activities, ensuring compliance, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Accountable to the Lead Nurse/Nurse III. Facilitates groups and ensures nursing standards of care throughout all phases of the nursing process and service delivery.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical direction, supervision, and coordination of nursing staff on the assigned unit.
  • Assist in staffing schedule coordination to maximize quality of care.
  • Communicate personnel needs to the Lead Nurse promptly.
  • Ensure nursing services are delivered correctly and compliant with CMHIP policies and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain and communicate nursing standards and updates to staff.
  • Conduct coaching sessions and regular communication with staff.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and department leadership to disseminate nursing directives.
  • Prepare nursing personnel for onsite surveys and documentation requirements.
  • Implement performance improvements and unit-level procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with the Nurse Practice Act, State Board of Nursing, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Support nursing staff in maintaining a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment.
  • Respond promptly to patient psychiatric/medical issues, trauma‑informed care, and critical situations.
  • Ensure correct medication administration and adherence to infection control standards.
  • Evaluate and revise nursing care plans based on patient histories.
  • Educate patients, families, and groups on medications, care needs, and psychiatric care.
  • Provide coverage and leadership on shift/unit as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned.
  • Appropriate education may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply the nursing process and treatment plans.
  • Experience directing shifts through training, mentorship, and development.
  • Strong work ethic based on self‑motivation, loyalty, honesty, and integrity.
  • Dependable, responsible, and adaptable.
  • Previous state experience.

  • CBI & FBI fingerprint check, Colorado Court Database check, Medicare Fraud Database, TRAILS Database check.
  • CAPS check for vulnerable adults.
  • Various shift work may be required.
  • Required to report without delay for essential/emergency services.
  • 2‑step TB screening upon hire.
  • Position paid biweekly.
  • Physical requirements:

    ability to perform CTI & CPR, lift, contain, and defend as described.
  • Annual influenza vaccination.
  • Must be able to read, comprehend, and communicate in English.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Disciplinary history disclosure for former CDHS employees.
