Overview
Work involves performing wildland reduction and mitigation efforts aimed at decreasing wildfire risks across Pueblo County; protecting lives, property, and natural resources by applying fire prevention strategies; participating in wildland and structural firefighting; conducting search-and-rescue missions; and executing dive emergency responses. Uses tactics approved by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG), manages firefighting equipment and tools, and operates within the Incident Command System, all while strictly adhering to safety standards and operational protocols.
Performs wildland mitigation projects, including creating defensible spaces and operating wildland/fire mitigation equipment such as chainsaws and wood chippers. Responds to emergency calls for services such as fire, search and rescue (SAR), and dive team missions. Extinguishes fires and/or establishes defensible zones to prevent the spread of fire. Executes these tasks while equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including, if necessary, the utilization of a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
Drives emergency vehicles of various types to emergency scenes safely and efficiently, prioritizing the safety of the public and fellow responders. Operates and maintains firefighting equipment and apparatus. Operates fire apparatus during emergency responses or patrols, particularly on days of heightened fire risk, such as Red-Flag Warning days. Educates and prepares citizens to prevent fires by advising, guiding, and assisting with fire mitigation.
- Participates in ongoing training programs essential for the safe and effective execution of duties and maintains all required certifications.
- Participates in volunteer team meetings and other public meetings as required.
Candidates must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and a valid Colorado driver’s license. Additionally, candidates must have one (1) year or more of experience performing firefighter duties and an ICS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System (ICS) Certification.
Within 60 days of hire, the following certifications will be required: ICS-200 Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents, L-180 Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service, S-130 Firefighter Training, S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
Selection ProcessThe selection process includes, but is not limited to, a panel interview. Prior to employment, candidates will complete/pass a background investigation, polygraph examination, and physical examination to include a drug screen. The expected duration of the selection process will not normally exceed two months. Candidates not selected may reapply in the future. This posting may be used to fill multiple openings.
