The Campus Survivor Advocate (SA) provides and coordinates services and advocacy for survivors of sexual assault (including sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking). The Survivor Advocate works within approved university policies, including the SEXUAL MISCONDUCT POLICY complying with Title IX regulations and the Clery Act.
This position works 28 hours per week, primarily during fall and winter semesters.
What you will be doing in this positionSupport and assist members of the campus community who are survivors of sexual misconduct:
- Confidential Support – Serve as a private point of contact and maintain confidential case records for survivors of sexual assault.
- Counseling & Crisis Response – Provide individual/group trauma therapy, crisis counseling, and coordinate with campus mental health services.
- Advocacy & Case Management – Assist survivors through university, Title IX, and criminal justice processes, including attending meetings and providing case management.
- Resource Connection – Maintain and share survivor resources; provide referrals to medical, counseling, academic, financial, Title IX, and law enforcement services.
- Outreach & Education – Plan and implement awareness and outreach activities on and off campus.
Serve on Campus Committees and Collaborate with Off-Campus Organizations:
- Provide input on ongoing development of campus policies and procedures related to sexual assault in accordance with the Clery Act, Title IX and other federal and state guidelines, as assigned by supervisor
- Collaborate with Campus Title IX Coordinator and relevant off-campus organizations to provide coordinated response to sexual assault, as assigned by supervisor
Stay Current on Issues and Trends in Survivor Advocacy and Title IX:
- Receive training and education on at least an annual basis
- Attend training workshops and conferences, as travel budgets allow, to stay informed and current on emerging best practices related to campus response to sexual assault
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- Minimum education requirement:
Master’s degree in mental health counseling or related field with appropriate licensure - Minimum experience requirement: three years of therapy/counseling, including two years providing direct service and crisis intervention to survivors of sexual assault
- Utah State Certified Survivor Advocate (40 hour trained), Certified Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor or equivalent or willingness to receive training
- Knowledge of available campus, community and national resources and services for survivors of sexual assault
- Knowledge of current literature related to campus sexual misconduct and federal regulations on campus sexual assault such as Title IX regulations and the Clery Act
