A Main Line Technician is a skilled automotive professional responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of vehicle systems. This role focuses on more complex mechanical and electrical issues beyond routine maintenance. Main Line Technicians ensure vehicles are repaired efficiently, accurately, and in accordance with manufacturer standards.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform advanced diagnostic work on drive-ability issues, electrical systems, engines, transmissions, suspension, and brakes.
  • Conduct detailed inspections and identify mechanical problems using diagnostic tools and test equipment.
  • Carry out major repairs including engine and transmission overhauls, as well as HVAC and steering system repairs.
  • Follow all dealership and manufacturer repair procedures and standards.
  • Communicate effectively with service advisors and other team members regarding vehicle status and repair timelines.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Stay current with factory technical bulletins and service training.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and dealership policies at all times.
Qualifications:

1. Education & Certification
  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Trade school or technical training in automotive repair (preferred)
  • ASE Certifications (Automotive Service Excellence) - highly valued
  • Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., Mopar, Ford, GM, Toyota)
2. Experience
  • 1-5 years of hands-on experience in automotive repair or maintenance (depending on role level)
  • Diagnostic experience using scan tools (for advanced techs)
  • Experience working with specific brands or types of vehicles (if dealership-based)
3. Skills
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities
  • Knowledge of engine, transmission, brake, suspension, and HVAC systems
  • Ability to read and interpret repair manuals and schematics
  • Proficient with diagnostic equipment and tools (OBD-II scanners, multi-meters)
  • Basic computer literacy (for repair orders, diagnostics, online training)
