Job Description Utility Billing & Accounts Specialist - Temporary (Part‑time 28 hrs/wk)

CES Physical Facilities is to undergo a system‑wide software improvement project beginning January 2026 through December 2030. To facilitate this, the Utility Billing & Accounts Specialist supports the university’s monthly utility billing, reconciliation, and payment processes for all campus facilities. This part‑time position plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of utility invoicing, meter data, and cost allocations.

This role collaborates closely with Facilities, Energy Management, Finance, and external utility providers to maintain reliable financial and operational utility data.

What You’ll Do In This Position
  • Receive, review, and process monthly utility invoices (electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, heating, chilled water, waste, etc.).
  • Verify invoice accuracy, resolve discrepancies, and ensure alignment with contract terms, rate structures, and meter data.
  • Prepare utility payment requests and work with Accounts Payable to ensure timely vendor payments.
  • Track billing cycles and proactively follow up with vendors regarding late or missing invoices.
  • Compare utility invoices to metering data, usage trends, and historical costs to identify abnormalities.
  • Collaborate with Energy Management staff to validate consumption data and investigate anomalies.
  • Maintain utility cost and consumption databases/systems, ensuring data quality and completeness.
Required

What qualifies you for this role:

  • Firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Energy Management, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in billing, accounts payable, finance, utility/energy data management, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting systems.
  • Ability to manage deadlines, multitask, and work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • Experience with utility billing, energy management systems, or university/large‑campus operations.
  • Familiarity with utility rate structures and basic energy terminology.
  • Experience working in a higher‑education or public‑sector environment.

Pay Grade: 48

Typical Starting Pay: $20.25 to $26.50 an hour
