Senior Research Assistant
The Senior Research Assistant will independently maintain cell lines and reagents, perform transfections, PCR, Western blotting, and extractions of RNA, DNA and protein. The assistant will also prepare equipment and supplies to allow successful laboratory experiments. The candidate is expected to maintain order in the lab and independently perform experiments in collaboration with computational biologists and other lab members. The role involves collecting, recording and interpreting experimental data, and contributing to grant and manuscript writing in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
The position supervises and assists students, post‑docs and other research assistants.
The Fair brother Laboratory uses a combination of computational biology and high‑throughput genomics techniques to identify functional elements in the genome. Projects include:
1) understanding how specific sequence elements are recognized by the splicing machinery;
2) identifying mutations or polymorphisms that disrupt splicing in the human population.
This is a fixed‑term position with a current end date of one year from the date of hire, which may be extended based on available funding.
Job QualificationsEducation and Experience
- Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years of lab experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry.
- Competent in basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, electrophoresis, Western blotting, and in growing and maintaining mammalian cell cultures.
- Preferred:
Specific experience in RNA/DNA purification and analysis, next‑generation sequencing, biochemistry, or cellular imaging.
- Strong organizational, technical, scientific, and time‑management skills.
- Ability to supervise others.
- Ability to design, conduct, and evaluate experiments independently.
- Knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with co‑workers.
