Position Purpose

Responsibilities include supervising custodial staff so that buildings and assets of the University are clean and well maintained. The role ensures high quality fulfillment of cleaning tasks by assigning an appropriate number of staff, ensuring availability of proper equipment, training staff in appropriate methods, evaluating staff performance, soliciting customer feedback for use in appraising staff, and coordinating other tasks as needed to complement the overall custodial program.

Administer a variety of administrative functions such as payroll data submission, key control system maintenance, attendance record upkeep, work order management, safety program administration, and collective bargaining agreement administration between the University and USAW FM RI. Perform visual inspections of all locations under responsibility.

Job Qualifications and Competencies
  • Associates degree and 2-4 years custodial/ janitorial/ maintenance experience or equivalent.
  • 2 years experience supervising employees; preferable in a union environment.
  • Valid driver's license maintained for at least 2 years prior to appointment.
  • Knowledge of custodial/janitorial principles, equipment, tools and materials.
  • Knowledge of general industry safety practices and standards within the custodial profession.
  • Knowledge of supervision of bargaining unit employees.
  • Excellent customer‑oriented service skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Assertive approach to personnel matters and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, diverse environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to process time & attendance and work order scheduling proficiently.
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of information and plan appropriate responses.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate the work of others fairly and thoughtfully.
  • Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Flexibility and responsiveness in work tasks.
  • Commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative, team‑centered environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and assign work orders to staff to increase productivity, eliminate wasteful time, and improve customer service.
Additional Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Regularly required to talk and hear; must stand, walk, use hands and arms to reach; specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and focus adjustment. May be required to wear PPE including steel‑toed shoes, non‑slip shoes, eye protection, nitrile and leather gloves.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, and climb stairs for long durations during and outside shifts.
  • Must be able to work under adverse temperatures and/or weather conditions.
  • Must meet the Animal Care Facility Program requirements, including completion of an Occupational Health and Wellness Survey and medical monitoring.
  • Position is on‑site.
  • Incumbents required to work evenings, weekends, and holiday rotations as needed.
