Nursing Supervisor at Brown University Health
. Provide leadership and coordination of all Hospital departments during evening and night hours to facilitate the functioning of the Hospital as a synergistic, harmonious, and integrated environment in which the mission, vision and values of Newport Hospital will be fulfilled. In the absence of Hospital Department Managers and Administrators, oversee the operation of all Hospital departments and interpret and enforce Hospital policies.
Assist the Nursing Staff through clinical consultation, coordination of the particular nursing resources available and assist in the provision of nursing care to patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients as needed. - Maintain current BLS and ACLS certification.
- Coordinate patient care and ensure the utilization of the nursing process by all staff members.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Nursing’s Mission, Vision, and Values and the Nursing Professional Practice Model.
- Make rounds to review work activity on nursing units and serve as a resource to staff.
- Assist in the provision of nursing care to patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients as needed.
- Foresee potential problems and intervene to offset adverse impact.
- Consult with Admitting regarding placement of patients and function in the absence of case management when needed.
- Provide services not available during night hours such as Medical Records, Pharmacy, and SSPD.
- Notify unit/department leadership of all critical events.
- Collaborate with nursing management to ensure that the department’s scope of services meets the needs and expectations of internal and external customers.
- Create a shared vision by developing and continuously communicating the Nursing Division’s goals in alignment with the hospital’s mission.
- Demonstrate flexibility and innovation to facilitate changes required to improve operations or enhance revenue, effectiveness, productivity, responsiveness, and quality factors.
- Respond to and provide direction on changing workload during crises and emergency situations.
- Exhibit effective decision‑making skills and develop strategic alliances inside and outside the organization.
- Assist nursing management to ensure that department functions comply with applicable regulatory, licensure, and accreditation standards.
- Promote a philosophy of continuous learning and professional development through participation in professional organizations and local, regional, or national programs.
- Advocate for the hospital and act as a role model in customer service.
- Demonstrate knowledge of employee relations policies and procedures, assess manpower needs, and authorize reassignment and replacement of staff.
- Assess competence of employees upon hire, transfer, and annually, with age‑specific consideration for patient needs.
- Recognize staff achievements, counsel employees proactively, and recommend disciplinary action when appropriate.
- Promote teamwork and participation in problem‑solving and decision‑making.
- Facilitate orientation and education of nursing staff on evening/night shifts and develop in‑service education programs for the Nursing Division.
- Serve as instructor (as qualified) and provide training for certification classes such as BLS and ACLS.
- Develop and implement a department education and training plan covering safety, competency, and continual improvement linked to departmental goals.
