Summary:

The mobility assistant functions under the supervision of the Staff Registered Nurse (RN) in collaboration with Brown University Health Rehabilitation Services (LRS), and within hospital and department policies and procedures, assists in caring for patients and/or families from admission to discharge. All essential functions reflect the age-specific needs of the patients. Responsibilities
  • Provide mobility interventions including safe bed mobility, transfers to and from bed and chair/commode, ambulation with/without assistive device under the direction of the RN and/or LRS therapist.
  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) with a focus on mobility independence, including ambulation, positioning, dressing, and toileting.
  • Ensure accurate fitting of assistive devices for mobility.
  • Progress patient mobility toward goals; communicate observations to the responsible RN and report any abnormal vital signs or symptoms promptly.
  • Maintain a safe patient environment and comply with infection control practices per department policies.
  • Perform basic patient care skills (e.g., vital signs) under the direction of the RN.
  • Address age-specific needs of geriatric, adult, and adolescent patients; maintain ongoing education and competencies as directed by the supervisor.
  • Assist with data collection, management plans, and monitoring patient response to mobility interventions; reinforce patient instruction on safe mobility, gait sequencing, and weight bearing status as appropriate.
  • Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Ability to respond in emergency/code situations, including CPR when required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current Basic Life Support with Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Certified Nursing Assistants preferred; healthcare-focused student or equivalent experience in patient mobility considered.
  • Read, write, and speak English; ability to perform basic computer skills.
  • Ability to identify and report unsafe situations to the Staff Nurse.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide care to patients across the life span with consideration of aging and cultural patterns.
Experience
  • Experience and/or education in patient mobility is recommended.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital staff at all levels.
  • Reading and mathematical abilities to perform documentation, operate monitoring equipment, and maintain a safe environment.
Work Environment and

Physical Requirements

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals, physicians’ offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Direct patient contact with potential hazards minimized by safety procedures and protective equipment. Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking. May require lifting/turning patients and equipment. Repeated bending, squatting, and stooping.

Independent Action

Works under the supervision of the RN in collaboration with LRS therapists within hospital and department policies. Refers complex problems to supervisor where clarification is required. Supervisory staff is physically present most of the time.

Pay Range

$17.00-$25.31
