SUMMARY

Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFEs) are Registered Nurses and Advanced Practice Providers who complete additional education and training to provide comprehensive health care to survivors of sexual assault. SAFEs will be mission driven with a commitment to participating in SAFE on call and emergency response care at all Brown University Health Emergency Departments. SAFEs will collaborate with medical providers in the hospital setting to provide trauma informed, patient centered and equitable medical care, forensic evidence collection, community resource referrals and advocacy that meets the best practice standards established by the US Department of Justice.

SAFEs will additionally be prepared to testify in a criminal or civil trial as a fact or expert witness when necessary. RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Respond to hospital EDs to provide victims of sexual assault time‑sensitive, trauma informed, comprehensive, medical forensic examination including but not limited to
  • Maintain the chain of custody and adhere to evidence collection protocols.
  • Obtain a detailed history for the purpose of evidence collection and medical treatment.
  • Collaborate with ED provider regarding medication recommendations for emergency contraception and STI prophylaxis.
  • Complete a head‑to‑toe assessment to assess for and document injuries, use forensic photography for identification/documentation of injuries.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary staff for discharge planning which may also include external agency staff such as rape crisis advocates and law enforcement.
  • Meet 24‑hour on‑call minimum requirement to respond to hospital EDs 24/7 within established timeframe as members of the contracted SAFE team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND REQUIREMENTS
  • If Registered Nurse:
    Graduate of a school of nursing with current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
  • If Advanced Practice Provider:
    Graduation from an accredited APP program and certification/registration as Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in the State of Rhode Island.
  • General Requirements:
    Minimum of 2 years' experience as a registered nurse or advanced practice provider. Experience in emergency care, women's health, adolescent healthcare or related field preferred. Meets hospital credentialing, professional licensing qualifications and fulfill requirements for ongoing education and quality review. SAFEs will participate in 6/12 monthly SAFE Team meetings and participate in a yearly 4‑hour educational update. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status.
  • Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients.
  • Exposed to patient care environment.
  • Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting, positioning, and pushing patients on stretchers.
  • Physical ability to respond to on call response at all scheduled hours and days within 1 hour of hospital request (24/7 mobile program)

  • None.
Pay Range

$35.00-$70.00
