Summary

Under the supervision of the Histology Supervisor, perform a wide variety of duties related to the completion and distribution of histological slides, maintenance of stainers and cover slippers, handling of blocks, and inventory management. Resolve issues within the scope of authority or refer them appropriately.

Responsibilities
  • Enter specimen data into the computer, organize and print logs and labels, and coordinate slide distribution.
  • Operate automated slide stainers and cover slippers, and label slides.
  • Distribute slides and paperwork to pathologists and residents following the daily schedule.
  • Maintain staining solutions in automated stainers and perform daily maintenance on stainers and cover slippers.
  • Maintain logs and related paperwork.
  • Receive and stock inventory, replenish chemicals from the storeroom to individual lab areas.
  • Handle blocks, including transport from the surgical suite to histology, and scan blocks into transport and embedding logs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of safety and injury management, attend training, and report hazards.
  • Follow safety, environmental, and infection control practices per hospital policies.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Other Information Basic Knowledge
  • Associates Degree in Laboratory Science, college courses in Biology and Chemistry, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures for handling specimens.
  • Strong organizational and clerical skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and good computer skills.
Experience

Six months laboratory experience; relevant education may substitute for experience.

Working Conditions

Generally good conditions with some exposure to odors and chemicals; hazards minimized by safety procedures.

Independent Action

Performs independently within department policies; refers complex issues to supervisor.
