SUMMARYReports to the Ambulatory Clinical Manager and/or Practice Manager and under general supervision of the attending Physician and/or a Registered Nurse. In accordance with established policies and procedures, assists with direct patient care and provides both clinical and clerical support for the department, exemplifying Brown University Health’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Follows Adult Ambulatory Care workflow protocols to maximize quality and efficiency.
- Performs pre‑visit planning by reviewing and updating patient records prior to appointments.
- Communicates point‑of‑care reminders to providers via the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Prepares patients for examination and treatment: escorting from waiting area to exam room, performing vital signs, taking chief complaint, medication reconciliation, histories, and other services as outlined in workflow protocol.
- Documents patient complaints in the EMR and follows established protocols for health maintenance and chronic illness services.
- Performs testing procedures such as blood pressure, EKG, pulse oximetry, Hgb A1‑C, etc.
- Assists physicians during physical examinations and follows aseptic techniques during procedures.
- Completes follow‑up work: labeling and sending specimens, ensuring lab results are entered, tracking orders and results, and contacting patients for lab/outreach reminders.
- Reports abnormal lab results to physician or nurse immediately.
- Follows up on specialty referrals and consult reports, ensuring EMR is updated and patients receive timely reminders.
- Monitors supplies, cleans equipment, and reports broken or missing equipment to the manager immediately.
- Prepares exam rooms, verifies patient demographics and insurance information, obtains prior authorizations as needed, and verifies prescription refills.
- Mails letters and reminders to patients and manages time effectively.
- Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control as per department policies.
- Supports the patient‑centered medical home by demonstrating flexibility and willingness to change.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Minimum education and training: High School graduate or equivalency; graduate of a formal Medical Assistant training program (≥9 months) or minimum 3 years of experience in a comparable setting.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support Certification.
- Proficient in using a personal computer, scanner, EMR and other software applications.
- Ability to understand and apply policies, procedures and protocols.
- Ability to interact professionally with patients, providers, supervisors and peers.
- Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Knowledge of the care of patients across the lifespan, including aging, human developmental stages and cultural patterns.
- Experience preferred: three years as a medical assistant in an ambulatory setting; experience with EMR and appointment scheduling software.
- Physical requirements:
walks and stands intermittently; may lift and position patients and lift supplies up to 50 lb.
$21.97–$22.53 per hour
