Position Overview

The Department of Philosophy at Rhode Island College seeks a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor to teach undergraduate courses across the curriculum, with particular strengths in Ethics and Social/Political Philosophy
. The successful candidate will teach in both the major and general education program, advise students, maintain an active research agenda, and contribute to departmental and college service.

As a proud Hispanic‑Serving Institution ( HSI ), RIC serves a diverse and largely first‑generation student population. We seek a teacher‑scholar committed to inclusive, student-centered pedagogy and to engaging undergraduates in philosophical inquiry.

  • Teach Philosophy courses at all undergraduate levels, including in Ethics and Social/Political.
  • Teach Philosophy courses in the general education curriculum.
  • Serve as academic advisor to Philosophy majors and minors.
  • Engage in scholarly research and professional activities
  • Engage with a variety of philosophical topics and traditions.
  • Participate in departmental planning and activities.
Occasional Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair.
  • Participate in college-wide committees and service.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Evidence of effective undergraduate teaching
  • Ability to work well with undergraduate students and colleagues.
Required Qualifications

Education: Ph.D. in Philosophy.

Experience: College-level teaching experience in Philosophy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness to adopt a faculty leadership role as part of the RIC shared governance model following award of tenure.
  • Evidence of effective teaching with first‑generation students and a diverse population.

Teaching is performed in a traditional classroom setting, some online teaching.

Assistant Professor – $66,569.93
May be eligible for additional compensation based on prior collegiate level or industry specific experience.
