Lincoln School, founded in 1884, is an independent K-12 Quaker girls’ school in Providence, Rhode Island. We also offer a coed program from six weeks through Pre-Kindergarten. We are currently seeking applicants for a Director of Counseling and Wellness. The Director of Counseling and Wellness is a full-time (11-month) position and will report directly to the Head of School. The Director of Counseling and Wellness will provide leadership and support for mental health and emotional wellness services. During the academic year, the Director of Counseling and Wellness is responsible for overseeing counseling services in all four school divisions, including crisis intervention, mental health outreach, Health and Wellness class programming, and family programs on mental health and wellness, to enhance the psychological and emotional wellbeing of students and the community.

In addition, the Director of Counseling and Wellness will supervise the Lower School Counselor.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide short-term individual counseling, group counseling, and crisis counseling to students;
  • Respond and attend to emergency situations as needed, including suicide risk assessments, threat assessments, and interfacing with child protective services for grades N-12;
  • Refer students to outside professionals, psychotherapists, psycho pharmacologists, and nutritionists;
  • Stay current with emerging trends in mental health and wellness and act as a consultant for the faculty, Division Directors and Head of School around child and adolescent development and mental health;
  • Supervise and provide clinical support to the Lower School Counselor;
  • Keep current, coordinate, and implement the Health and Wellness curriculum in the Lower, Middle, and Upper School;
  • Serve on the Little, Lower, Middle, and Upper School Student Support Teams;
  • Plan and facilitate educational programs for families around current topics in mental health and wellness;
  • In collaboration with the Learning Specialists, intake neuropsychological testing and make recommendations for school-based accommodations for students K-12;
  • Develop plans for students returning to school after hospitalizations (both psychiatric and medical) and coordinate care with their outside providers;
  • Collaborate with the Director of DEIB to align our health and wellness initiatives with positive identity development and culturally responsive pedagogy, and promote an inclusive school community;
  • Undertake additional administrative and instructional duties as determined by the Head of School.
Successful Candidates will meet the following requirements:
  • Advanced degree in school psychology, school counseling, clinical psychology, clinical social work or a related field;
  • Knowledge of current trends, research, and best practices in child and adolescent psychology;
  • Have a minimum of three years of experience working with young children and adolescents in a mental health setting, and ideal candidates will have experience working in a school setting;
  • A commitment to working in a school setting and engaging in the life of the school.
  • Prior experience providing clinical supervision;

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and critical thinking skills.
