Job Summary

RISD Continuing Education is in search of an inspired art educator who supports the growth of teens as part of our in-person youth program. The ideal candidate has experience in art education, is prepared to guide students with empathy, and can teach in person to a diverse group of students from various abilities and experiences. We welcome candidates whose teaching addresses historically underrepresented communities.

RISD Continuing Education is seeking a practicing art and design educator interested in supporting the growth of aspiring teen artists exploring future career opportunities. The ideal candidate has art education experience, a history of successful freelance art/design work, and extensive knowledge of potential career paths in art. Applicants should be ready to teach online while delivering a course to a diverse group of students with various abilities and experiences.

Impact on Students

As a youth programs instructor, you will guide teens toward aspiring career paths through problem-solving in art and design. The program emphasizes design thinking, communication, and creation. Students will rely on you for guidance while navigating daily prompts and assignments. Each class serves as an opportunity for students to develop socially and intellectually; by the end of the course, they will identify new or refine existing academic and career goals with your help.

RISD Continuing Education supports instructors with ongoing improvements to help you build courses you are excited to teach. You will receive personalized support from our program manager to enhance your teaching.

What We Are Teaching

We are seeking an instructor to teach two sections of Start Drawing, in person on the RISD campus in Providence, RI. The successful candidate will have a strong background aligned with the course description. The current course description is:

  • Whichever creative field calls you, it all starts with drawing. This skill helps artists and designers communicate ideas visually. Explore a variety of drawing media to add texture and character to drawings. Learn to observe closely, measure with your eyes, and produce intentional marks. Improve hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and the ability to communicate through art. Each exercise guides you to wield your pencil with purpose.

  • Gain confidence in expressing ideas visually
Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required
  • BS, BFA or Art/Design Major required
  • Teaching experience, including the ability to create syllabi and lesson plans and align them to learning outcomes
  • Demonstrated expertise in drawing
  • Ability to convey complex art and design concepts to students with varied skills (novice to advanced) in a condensed time frame
  • Ability to accept and act upon constructive feedback from course evaluations by students and staff
  • Ability to develop and implement diverse teaching and learning for learners from varied educational backgrounds, environments and expectations
  • Ability to meet RISD’s technology requirements
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Knowledge/Skills/Experience Preferred
  • Experience teaching K-12 in art and design
