Student Life Managers serve as vital members of the Pre-College Student Life leadership team within the Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs. They are responsible for fostering the growth and development of seasonal staff members, supervising a cohort of undergraduate and graduate seasonal staff, providing ongoing training, consultation, and mentorship to develop student support, customer service, supervision, and project management skills.
The Student Life Manager will participate in the summer on-call rotation (night and weekend work required). Meal plan provided. On-call requirements mean staff must access the Brown University campus within 25 minutes from residence. On-campus housing will be provided as needed. An auxiliary assignment supporting Residence Education, Student Learning and Development, or Housing Operations will be assigned based on interest, experience, and program needs.
Responsibilities
- Promote Pre-College student development, engagement, holistic growth and well-being.
- Facilitate a vibrant student life experience for Pre-College participants that is developmental, memorable and engaging.
- Build and maintain a welcoming, safe, and inclusive student community; address student needs.
- Learn about the Pre-College programs to better support student success in and out of the classroom.
- Demonstrate acceptable conduct within the residence hall and campus communities.
- Enforce Pre-College policies and procedures; address participant behavior and ensure documentation, communication and accountability.
- Intervene with unsafe or concerning behavior and ensure follow-up and documentation.
- Assist seasonal staff with conflict resolution and mediation.
- Serve as a primary administrator for non-academic student conduct cases, as needed.
- Serve as a case manager for student wellness concerns, as needed.
- Collaborate with Pre-College Student Life staff to determine if a participant should leave the program for well-being and communicate with families and support systems.
- Supervise a cohort of graduate staff as paraprofessionals in residential roles with ongoing support and accountability.
- Build supportive professional relationships; facilitate weekly staff meetings; provide updates and address staff questions.
- Meet individually with staff to guide and support staff and student needs; mentor for professional development.
- Guide staff in engaging with students to ensure developmentally appropriate, student-centered, inclusive engagement.
- Assist staff in managing budgets, payments, and purchasing; align spending with policies.
- Oversee staff appreciation efforts and budgets.
- Delegate tasks and share information with appropriate staff.
- Provide ongoing feedback on performance and development, including competencies and contributions to the team.
- Enforce policies and report unsafe or concerning behavior by staff to appropriate personnel.
- Create and manage an on-call duty schedule; oversee time tracking for compensation.
- Support staff training by attending sessions, ensuring attendance, and aiding with planning and logistics; develop supplemental training resources.
- Respond to inquiries promptly to maintain trust in the program.
- Be visible, available, and approachable to support participants and families.
- Serve on a rotating on-call schedule as part of a crisis response team; on-call coverage includes day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Be available for emergencies or unplanned needs with little notice.
- Complete administrative paperwork (health and safety forms, facilities work orders, logs, payroll sheets, etc.).
- Communicate and implement housing-related processes (check-in/check-out, travel requests, drills, health and safety checks, room changes, damage billing, etc.).
