SUMMARY:
The Pre‑K Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in supervising children to ensure their safety and well being; providing instruction and facilitation to groups and individual children under the direction of the Teacher; and collaborating with the Teacher to assess the strengths and needs of children and design appropriate classroom activities. - Assist teacher in any way possible.
- Plan activities for assigned groups or individual children.
- Implement the daily schedule as assigned.
- Decorate the room with bulletin boards, pictures, children's artwork, and other hangings.
- Serve breakfast, lunches, and snacks.
- Help with materials and room clean‑up and organization.
- Provide nurturing and supportive environment for children, using positive behavior interventions and preventative strategies.
- Complete required training hours each year by local workshops and trainings.
- Assume temporary responsibilities of the teacher in her/his absence.
- Report any special needs or problems of individual children to the classroom teacher.
- Work with children who have special needs, supporting their developmental and behavioral characteristics.
- Report any cases of suspected child abuse and/or neglect to Director, or make a direct call to DCYF (1‑800‑RICHILD).
- Assist in supervising naptime, outdoor play and toileting.
- Help implement educational plans to meet the needs of individual students.
- Confers with teacher in preparation of school reports.
- Complete weekly progress notes and mail them every Friday.
- Effect a positive learning environment.
- Actively participate in teacher‑directed activities with the students.
- Create bulletin boards and classroom decorations as requested by the teacher.
- Maintain positive student‑staff relationships.
- Cover exploratory, Friday activity, lunch periods and bus duty as scheduled.
- Plan and coordinate exploratory activities, submitting plans one week in advance.
- Report to staff about activities at Tuesday staff meeting.
- Cover class lunch table and bus duty per policy and procedure.
- Effectively manage behaviors within the classroom and other settings.
- Follow CAP City policies and procedures regarding behavior management.
- Attend training and use non‑violent crisis intervention.
- Modify programming as necessary to promote positive behavior.
- Use Reality Therapy or other psycho‑educational methods to affect positive behavior change.
- Attend weekly staff supervision meetings and general meetings; attend 90% of scheduled staff and team meetings.
- Perform various duties as requested by the classroom teacher, including correcting papers and tests, running dittos, giving tests, obtaining snacks and supplies, monitoring store and break time.
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- CDA or active participation in CDA program or completion of RIDE‑approved Teacher Assistant Training Program OR 12 credit hours of early childhood or related coursework.
- Level I or II RIELS certification preferred (must be able to complete within 2 years from date of employment).
- Language Skills – Ability to read and interpret lesson plans and books; write and print posters and signs.
- Mathematical Skills – Ability to perform basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
- Reasoning Ability – Ability to recognize problems.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations – Ability to work toward CPR & first aid certification;
Ability to work toward CDA certification.
