Please note that this position is available for one year only. Hired candidates will be displaced or non-renewed from the position for the following school year; however, displaced teachers remain district employees and will be guaranteed a position in SY26‑27.
School NurseProvidence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional school nurse who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students and stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who seek a challenging yet rewarding teaching experience.
Education- Under direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, teaches and instructs students in academic subject matter, social, emotional, behavioral, and educational skill areas.
- Additional responsibilities include:
academic advocacy for students, best teaching practices, creating a personalized, rigorous, socially engaging school environment, partnering with community organizations and parents, participating in district and school-based professional development, engaging in district-driven curricular initiatives, and following all relevant School Board Policy.
Principal
Education Requirements- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in school nursing from an accredited college or university.
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse.
- Successful experience as a registered nurse for a minimum of 3 years.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certified.
- School Nurse Teacher Certificate.
- ESL Certification Preferred.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Be knowledgeable and implement the School Health Program according to the Rules and Regulations of the RI Dept. of Health.
- Administer first aid care for medical emergencies.
- Assist physicians for all health examinations conducted in the school setting, including preliminary tests such as height, weight, and blood pressure.
- Responsible for all screenings as mandated by state law.
- Follow up on all defects in hearing, vision, and other health concerns.
- Continue follow-up on all incidents and/or accidents that occur in the school until recovery is apparent.
- Provide counseling and conduct home visits.
- Collaborate with physicians and health agencies regarding student health information.
- Serve as a member of the Crisis Team at the school level.
- Maintain optimal health and well‑being of students, increasing their knowledge and motivation to make responsible health decisions.
- Keep a daily log of all illnesses and accidents.
- Prepare monthly health reports for administration.
- Serve as a consultant/resource to the principal, parents, teachers, students, and outside agencies.
- Assist with the planning and execution of immunization programs.
- Provide in‑service education for school personnel.
- Establish communication channels among staff to assure referrals and follow‑up on pupil health problems.
- Assume other responsibilities as assigned by administration.
- Embrace diversity in the health office and effect positive changes in nurse/student relationships.
- Participate in shared decision‑making.
- Be available as needed to assist students before and after school.
- Cover medications and emergencies for an absent School Nurse‑Teacher as assigned.
