Position Overview

Location:

Prineville, Oregon. Appointment type:
Temporary staff. Anticipated start date: 03/09/2026. Anticipated end date: 08/14/2026.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect Greater Sage‑Grouse demographic data and perform field data collection.
  • Capture sage‑grouse, install VHF/UHF telemetry, monitor nests and brood, recover transmitters, sample vegetation, and conduct raptor‑raven point counts.
  • Travel between field sites and remote housing. Participate in variable hours including nights and weekends, average 40 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of college‑level courses in biological science (wildlife, range ecology, or related field) or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Pass the US Fish and Wildlife Service ATV/UTV Safety Certification course or present current certificate within 30 days of start date.
  • Ability to navigate using GPS, map, and compass; drive and safely navigate 4WD trucks on rugged backcountry roads.
  • Commitment to working professionally and inclusively with people from all backgrounds.
Preferred Experience
  • Previous ATV experience, field research experience, and radio telemetry tracking.
  • Experience in gamebird research, vegetation sampling, botany, and working alone in remote, backcountry conditions.
  • Experience with raptor identification and spotlighting techniques.
Working Conditions

Variable hours with occasional nights and weekends. Strenuous hiking up to 5 miles per day in inclement conditions; occasional camping in remote field settings. Work supervised by a graduate student but conduct data collection independently in an isolated environment following established protocols.

Compensation

Hourly. Minimum salary $18.06, maximum salary $23.88. Pay method hourly, pay period 16th–15th, pay date last working day of the month.
