The Transportation Worker 1 will report to the District Equipment Shop in Mercer County. Performs apprentice-level, unskilled-to-semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related buildings and structures. Uses light motorized highway maintenance equipment to repair and replace concrete and bituminous road surfaces, cleans culverts, and repairs shoulders. Performs rough carpentry and builds forms. Operates various maintenance equipment.
Performs minor maintenance on engines and automotive bodies for highway maintenance equipment. May also mow or clear brush along roads or DOH facilities using a hand scythe or hand mower. May plow snow using a light truck. Performs related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Selected applicants will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, and obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
• In the area of assignment of Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
Pay Grade 10H
Hourly Rate: $15.4913
Transportation Worker 1 – Mechanic
- Perform minor maintenance on fleet equipment and vehicles.
- Clean garage areas.
- Changes and repairs tires.
- Check and change automotive fluids.
- Install windshield wipers.
- Inspect vehicles for compliance with state regulations.
- May work with components on diesel-powered equipment.
- Assists higher-level mechanics in heavy equipment repairs.
- Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
- A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
- Knowledge of general safety procedures.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
- Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
- Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION
No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
This is the entry-level classification in this series. No prior experience is required.
