Core duties and responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily workflow, scheduling, and training of assigned staff and review work to ensure completeness and consistency.
  • Responsible for blood and blood culture collection; non-blood specimen collection including urine, sputum, semen samples, throat swabs; chain of custody specimen collection.
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.
  • Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible for patient groups from neonates to geriatrics.
  • Properly labels all specimens in the presence of the patient.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer systems, labeling printers, scanners, phone system, etc.).
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, clients, and staff.
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, report distribution, processing, and faxing.
  • Collect drug screens (internal and external) using Chain of Custody Process.
  • Assist Supervisor/Manager with day-to-day operations of the phlebotomy department.
  • Assist with the monthly scheduling of the phlebotomy staff and assign coverage for vacations and call-offs.
  • Monitor supply level and sub supply requisitions as needed to maintain optimal level of supplies.
  • Assist with customer complaints and help with investigations into issues in the collection of specimens.
  • Assist Supervisor/Manager with monitoring and evaluating productivity reports, unreceived specimen list, and work queues.
  • Assist with the orientation of all lab staff into the laboratory.
  • Provide training New Phlebotomy Techs.
  • Assist with annual competencies and evaluations of staff.
  • Oversee the operations of the phlebotomy department in the absence of the Supervisor/Manager.
Qualifications Minimum qualifications
  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of phlebotomy experience.
Preferred qualifications
  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: Phlebotomy Certification (CPT).
  • Experience: One (1) year of phlebotomy lead experience.

  • Heavy/Hard work:
    Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.
