Deputy Sheriff

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office is officially seeking dedicated, community-minded individuals to join our ranks. Whether you are starting your career in law enforcement or looking for a new agency to call home, we want to hear from you.

IN PERSON ONLY. The Deputy Sheriff will protect the public, enforce the law, investigate crimes, and maintain public safety in Mercer County, WV.

• Arrest and detain persons, including warrant and stop‑and‑frisk enforcement.
• Protect crime scenes, collect evidence, and secure evidence with chain‑of‑custody.
• Enforce DUI/traffic laws, conduct field sobriety tests, and administer breath tests.
• Operate patrol vehicle, respond to calls, and maintain vehicle safety.
• Conduct thorough investigations of criminal, traffic, and disaster incidents.
• Use physical force, including non‑lethal and deadly weapons, as warranted.
• Provide emergency medical assistance, including CPR and basic first aid.
• Write detailed reports, maintain logs, and testify in court proceedings.

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Successful completion of the Civil Service written examination and the Physical Agility Test.
• Prior law‑enforcement experience or certification not required, but considered an asset.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Valid drivers‑license with a clean driving record.
• Current medical clearance, psychological screening, and drug test clearance.

• Demonstrated ability to use authorized force for arrest or defense.
• Endurance in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and rain.
• Capability to run, climb, jump, and lift heavy objects or persons during emergencies.

• Testing Date:
  Mar 7, 2026 (Physical Agility Test & Civil Service Written Exam).
• Submit application in person at the Sheriff’s Office located at 1501 W. Main St., Princeton, WV 24740.
• Include required documents: physician’s release form, photo I.D., and any other supporting materials.

Current certified WV Deputy Sheriffs are encouraged to apply. Pay‑scale credit for completed years of service will be applied through the Deputy Sheriff Retirement System.
